It may be shoebox ugly from the outside, but these apartments are modeled after modernist architect Le Corbusier's scheme of towers in a park. The cosseted campus of Charles River Park has existed for more than 30 years as a world removed from the rest of the city. The grounds and pathways are well maintained and beautifully planted, and the hard-to-find routes into the complex enhance the sense of privacy. For decades it was made famous by the billboard outside, which taunted frustrated commuters with the words: "If you lived here, you'd be home now."

The hotel has a health club and pool. It has cable TV but only the most basic channels; no Disney or Nickelodeon. It also has one restaurant. A seemingly boring amenity, but one that may be useful for traveling families, is the coin-operated washer/dryer. Beats paying for a dry cleaner.
